Goodbye to IE 11 and Legacy Edge

This week, Microsoft has announced the end date for Internet Explorer 11 and legacy versions of Edge. IE11 has been around for a long time, and legacy refers to versions of Edge previous to its conversion to the Chromium backend. These internet browsers will be effectively unsupported by Microsoft, and vendors are expected to follow suit soon.

Beginning November 30, 2020, the Microsoft Teams web app will no longer support IE 11.

Beginning August 1, 2021, the remaining Microsoft 365 apps and services will no longer support IE 11.

What does this mean for you?

There are still a lot of applications and web-based connections that take advantage of protocols that exist within IE 11. One notable example is the ability to use ActiveX for dynamic content, which is required for certain functionality in older OnBase Web Client settings. Those functions do not work in other browsers, which can only use HTML based content.

Another issue may come up with ClickOnce deployments of the Unity Client, which typically only work correctly when using IE 11 to install them in older versions of OnBase.

Functionality in these areas will continue to work, however, support for them will be unavailable after the expiry dates, and with advancing updates to Windows 10 they may eventually stop running altogether.

How do we get around these issues?

There is hope for these changes – Hyland anticipated this change and has focused its efforts on using Chrome and Edge Chromium versions of browsers for OnBase functionality so that customers upgrading to OnBase Foundation will be able to make an easy transition to move away from reliance on IE 11.
