At some point you have probably asked yourself, how do I know if I have a good backup strategy? It’s an important question but, what you should really be asking is, how do I know if I have a good recovery strategy? In order to protect your data as best you can, you first need to identify your Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and Recovery Time Objective (RTO). In other words, how much data you can afford to lose and how long you can be out of commission. These two things set the guidelines for determining the best overall plan for your environment. Then you can look at hardware, available man hours, and budget to find the point where reality meets utopia.
