Microsoft Office 365 Changes That Will Affect You

Basic Authentication Being Changed to Modern Authentication

Recently, Microsoft announced that they would be deprecating the use of Basic Authentication for Exchange Online. The date for this is on October 13, 2020, and includes multiple protocols such as POP3, IMAP, and EWS for email delivery.

To be clear, this is not just a simple case of these products no longer being supported – they will cease to function. After October 2020, applications will not be able to connect to Exchange Online using Basic Authentication, but Microsoft will fully retire Basic Authentication in Q2 2021.

This is causing several problems for many companies, as the primary use of Basic Authentication has been to connect with business applications for automated import of email into a variety of environments, including company use of Outlook, for example. With these protocols no longer supported, companies and vendors need to make changes that will allow the continued use of their email connectivity.

How Are Vendors Handling This Challenge?

We have solutions that are already in design to correct this problem.

Hyland OnBase

Hyland has released information stating that they have identified that the Mailbox Importer module will begin to fail to import messages from Microsoft Office 365 beginning in Q2 2021. This affects all builds of OnBase from 13.1 (Beta) up, and if your system includes both of the following criteria:

• Your OnBase solution is licensed for Mailbox Importer
• Your business process includes importing emails from a Microsoft Office 365-hosted Exchange server using the Mailbox Importer module

The fix for this will be implemented in an April 2020 patch release – at this time only OnBase Foundation EP3 will be receiving this update.

For assistance on determining if this issue affects you, we will need to assess the root issue in the configuration of your system and then determine what needs to be corrected to allow connections to MS Office 365 Exchange, up to and including an upgrade to Foundation EP3.

ABBYY FlexiCapture

ABBYY Support is working on a fix pack to address this issue and is scheduled for release in Q3 2020. While they have not announced the specific build that they will be targeting for this update, it is likely that it will be for the newest version available and released in Q3. The current build at the time of this writing is 12.0.3.2634 – it is unclear if the added feature will be a fix pack to the existing version, or a new version by the end of the year.

Custom Email and File Import

For our proprietary Email and File Import program, our internal developer is already working on an update package that will allow connections to the new Modern Authentication protocol required by Microsoft. This is expected to release in approximately July 2020.
